The Zamfara State Police Command has announced the discovery of more than 30 decomposed bodies believed to be those of suspected bandits during ongoing clearance operations in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the operation began on October 28, 2026, following an attempted attack on Bukkuyum town by armed bandits.
According to the statement, security operatives, working alongside local civil security outfits, engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire, repelling the assault and preventing them from advancing into the community.
The police said more than 30 bodies believed to be those of neutralised bandits were later found in surrounding farmlands.
The command noted that the discovery suggested the attackers may have suffered significant casualties during the confrontation. However, it stressed that the actual number of casualties was still subject to verification.
“It is also noteworthy that the armed bandits are known to evacuate their casualties from battle locations. However, the actual number of casualties remains subject to further verification by the authorities,” the statement added.
The police spokesperson said the successful defence of Bukkuyum prevented the attackers from gaining access to the town, averting possible loss of lives and destruction of property.
He further disclosed that preliminary security assessments indicated that sustained operational pressure had compelled some of the remaining armed bandits to leave the state.
The Zamfara State Police Command said it would continue the operations in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to rid the area of armed criminal elements and ensure the safety of residents.
